I'm amazed nobody has suggested JGB. Garcia ' s bands are almost always more approachable for a newb. Vocals are much less the issue and he largely sticks to covers of standards. The Melvin Sears years are a no-brainer and I'd also think Garcia and Saunders is pretty accessible and shows off Garcia ' s guitar chops exceptionally well with a straightforward sound. 1973 Berkeley stuff is exemplary without lame flute and mediocre sax work added the next couple years.
